“A perfect stock-dog in days, not months! — You don’t have to be smarter than the dog! — The simplest, easiest, and fastest method ever devised!”
Train Your Own Stock Dog - by Bob Hinds - Softcover - 68 pages - ISBN 0972588760 - Illustrated
From the author, Bob Hinds:
“Back before the 1950’s, almost every farmer had a stock dog. They were usually the end product of some type of stray dog crossed with a shepherd - “Mostly sired by moonlight and damned by everybody!”
They were extra good dogs because they were used continually and got lots of practice. Many of these dogs would go get the milk cows when they saw someone heading for the barn, or often at a certain time of day; all of this without being told.
They didn’t know right or left, or commands that we teach them today, but they worked on their own and they did it right. I guess even a hound can handle cattle if you work with him long enough.
I grew up on a typical large farm with all types of livestock: cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, chickens, work horses and riding horses. The only way we had of handling our livestock was with a good fox-trotting saddle horse and a stock dog.
As a small boy, it was my job to train the young stock dogs. It sure took a long time to get one working proper with my lack of ability and inexperience, as well as the type of dog I was training.
Although I started with Border Collies, I have also trained about every other kind of stock dog. Some breeds have a few more worthwhile features, but are lacking in so many others that I have always returned to the Border Collie in the end.
On an NBC special some time ago, it was mentioned that the Border Collie is the most intelligent animal in existence, and that it was the nearest to humans in intelligence of any animal species.
A Border Collie’s greatest desire in life is to please its master. I’ve never seen another breed with such devotion. I have always felt that they will either please you, or acutally give up their life while trying.
You can develop a good dog by many methods of training, but the one that I have set down in this book has proven to me to be the most positive as well as the fastest. It works with other breeds as well as the Border Collie, although the Border Collie remains my personal favorite.”
